10 days China and Japan: Key Takeaways what’s new for Chem4Batteries
Our Asian presence and new partnerships for cathode materials and battery cell supply
After a decade of regular visits to China, my latest trip highlighted the country’s rapid technological advances, particularly in batteries, electric vehicle and drone manufacturing. The innovation gap with Europe is constantly growing and got again larger within the last year.
Interestingly, German electric cars cost currently up to 30% less in China than in Germany for identical models and features, highlighting Europe’s challenges with efficiency and productivity. For Europe to remain competitive, focusing on streamlining operations and reducing costs is essential; relying solely on import tariffs will not be enough.
Nevertheless, China encounters major obstacles such as a growing elderly population and upcoming needs for maintaining its immense infrastructure; challenges similar to those seen in other parts of the world like Germany/Europe. These circumstances present opportunities for German and European expertise, as well as innovative business models. Strategic collaboration is essential; German/European companies should pursue partnerships that leverage their strengths.
At Chem4Batteries, we are currently producing and supplying LFP/LMFP cathode materials as powder or as coated electrodes as well as cylindrical cells to Europe with proven success. We have also recently entered into a collaboration agreement on solid-state batteries. Additionally, we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a leading boutique consulting firm specializing in cell manufacturing support for layout planning, equipment selection, FAT and SAT as well as cell line ramp-up support. I remain convinced that this knowledge is essential for European success, and customers of Chem4Batteries stand to gain significant benefits from it.
However, we also recognize the related risks. As a result, we diversify our portfolio by maintaining partnerships in Japan, a country I have also visited. To enhance our non-Chinese offerings, we are working towards securing an additional cell manufacturing partnership especially for pouch cells fit for niche markets such as drone technology.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you wish to discuss potential collaboration topics.
